Frequently Asked Questions

Who created Nearby Crime?

Nearby Crime (NBC) was invented by a current Sheriff’s Office detective in Louisiana.  The detective noticed that suspects often commit the same type of crime across a geographic area spanning multiple jurisdictions. Suspects are often able to avoid apprehension due to lack of communication between agencies.

Does Nearby Crime integrate with other systems?

No, NBC is intended to be a stand-alone platform.  It is designed to be simple and easy to use, encouraging anyone to use it without any prior training.  The data that is entered into Nearby Crime comes from posts made by law enforcement officers and investigators.

How is Nearby Crime different than NCIC?

Detectives and officers use NBC at the very beginning of an investigation when there is little information or when they have information to share with other agencies who may be experiencing the same crimes involving the same suspect(s).   It is not a database but more of an online bulletin. The goal of NBC is to foster inter-agency collaboration in real-time.  NBC is often described as the Facebook of law enforcement or a 24-hour online intel meeting/criminal exchange.

How does Nearby Crime help solve crimes faster?

As soon as a detective begins working a case, he posts what information he has on NBC.  All users in adjacent areas are immediately sent a notification that a case has been posted that may be of interest.  Users log onto NBC and read case details.  If an individual has information about the case, they can phone, email or message the officer who posted the case.  It would not be uncommon for a post to be seen by hundreds of other law enforcement officers.  Since criminals tend to perform the same type of offense across adjacent jurisdictions, someone using the site will likely have valuable information and may be able to identify the suspect.

How does Nearby Crime protect officer safety?

If there is a suspect who has attempted to harm an officer in one agency, that officer immediately posts the information about the incident, such as a description of the person and vehicle.  He may indicate that the suspect is traveling in a certain direction.  If a patrol officer in a nearby agency sees the post, he now has knowledge of the suspect.  If the officer happens to come in contact with that suspect, he can exercise additional caution or call for backup.  Those additional steps could save his life!!!
